Great tournament atmosphere at the DHM Fencing (Individual)
German university championships fencing (individual) - Heidelberg
On 28 February 2026, our team of eight, consisting of three students from the university and three university students as well as the two coaches, made their way to Heidelberg to take part in the German University Championships in fencing (individual). On two competition days, we went with Mariana Freitas de Oliveira (Public Administration Management (HS)), Merit Dirksmeyer (Music/German (Uni)), Martin Dubas (General Administration (HS)) Simon Höwekenmeyer (Music/German (Uni)), Jana Lapsien (Geoinformatics (Uni)) and Johannes Vogel (Music Education and Musical (HS)) competed in both epee and foil and faced strong competition from all over Germany.
First day of the tournament: men's epee & women's foil
Saturday started early with the battles in men's epee and women's foil. In the preliminary round, we met various fencers from different universities and fought intense battles in which we were able to gain valuable tournament experience. Even though some of us unfortunately didn't go on after the first knockout phase, it was impressive to see the high standard of our opponents.
In the evening, we had the opportunity to round off the day together in a relaxed atmosphere.
Second day of the tournament: women's épée & men's foil
On Sunday, women's épée and men's foil were on the programme. Despite the exertion of the previous day, we started the day with renewed motivation. And everyone showed great commitment - even though it was an individual championship, we could always rely on the support of the others.
After two intense days of competition, we finally travelled back to Osnabrück. The German Individual University Championships were a challenging and at the same time very enriching experience for all of us. In addition to the personal achievements and results, the time spent together and the special tournament atmosphere will be remembered above all.
