Accident insurance

Accidents that occur in the context of our university sports programme are insured for the various groups of people under certain conditions, which we briefly describe below, via the Landesunfallkasse Niedersachsen (LUKN). However, the LUKN is responsible for deciding on a case-by-case basis. After the accident report, the LUKN will decide on acceptance or rejection. In the event of rejection, any costs, such as treatment and follow-up costs, must be borne privately.

For all accidents in university sports that are to be claimed via the LUKN, an accident doctor must be consulted promptly after the accident and an accident report must be submitted to the ZfH team within three days.

1. students:

Students at universities in Lower Saxony are covered by statutory accident insurance via the LUKN when participating in university sports, provided that the courses are supervised by an instructor and the activities are the responsibility of university sports. Accident cover can also be provided by the state accident insurance fund for participation in competitions (e.g. German university championships) and for participation in sports trips abroad under certain conditions (more information can be found on the website of the LUKN website).

The LUKN does not cover the costs of competitive sports activities or sports activities for which the university sports centre only provides sports facilities for free use (e.g. beach volleyball and free playing times etc.). These must be claimed from the personal health or accident insurance.

2. employees:

University and college employees (not civil servants) are also insured through the state accident insurance fund in the event of accidents in university sports, provided that these are supervised courses with exercise instructors, the offers are the responsibility of university sports and, in addition, the criteria for company sports are met. In detail, these are

The sporting activity must

  • offer a balance to work-related physical strain,
  • take place with a certain regularity ,
  • be broadly orientated (no pure participation in competitive sports) and
  • be limited to members of the university/college and be work-related.

3. civil servants:

Civil servants are not covered by statutory accident insurance in accordance with SGB VII. They receive accident benefits in the event of work-related accidents. However, in the event of an accident in the context of university sports, there is generally no entitlement to accident benefits, as the following requirements must be met in addition to the above-mentioned criteria in order to be recognised as an occupational accident:

  • The group must be led by an exercise leader authorised by the supervisor(s)
  • An attendance list must be kept
  • There must be an approved exercise plan for the group.

4. lecturers and authorised external persons:

Lecturers and authorised external persons are generally not insured against accidents via the LUKN.

Liability insurance

There is generally no liability insurance for participation in university sports. All participants are strongly recommended to take out private liability insurance.
